For the naming ceremony of Mein Schiff 7 in Kiel, SMIA staged a drone show with 400 drones. The launch site sat right inside the shipyard, and that is exactly where the real challenge came from.

Steel, cranes and GPS

A shipyard is about the most hostile environment imaginable for drones. Large steel structures and a massive shipyard crane reflect and shadow GPS signals, on which the positioning of every single drone depends. Where the signal wavers, the formation wavers.

The team therefore planned the launch areas along the signal conditions rather than along the most convenient logistics. The show ran stably, and all 400 drones held their positions.

The ship as the reference point

The ship’s position data fed directly into the show design. At a naming ceremony, the object is the centre of attention and the drone show takes second place. Sightlines, perspectives and movement sequences were therefore aligned to the ship and the audience positions, not to an abstract centre point in the sky.

A motif that looks perfect from the guest-of-honour area and distorted from the audience side is a design flaw. Calculating it in advance in the design studio rules that out.

Timecode with production and live broadcast

A naming ceremony follows a fixed sequence that cannot be shifted. The drone show was therefore tied to a timecode that linked it to the overall production and the live video broadcasts. Every formation hit its moment in the running order.

Conclusion

The naming of Mein Schiff 7 shows what a drone show can do when the environment works against it: 400 drones beneath a shipyard crane, in a steel environment, exactly in time with a running order that offers no second chance.

As part of the festival production, SMIA staged the Space Cowboys show in the Wacken sky, alongside the iconic Grawling Creatures as a separate special show. The timecode tied every formation precisely to the stage sound and lighting design, so that sky and stage worked as a single staging.

Conference of State Parliament Presidents NRW

For the Conference of State Parliament Presidents, at the invitation of State Parliament President André Kuper, 200 drones staged European motifs and the symbolic handover of the baton over Rietberg. The show accompanied a political event in which precision and timing left no room to spare.

Rietberger Himmelsleuchten 25

At Rietberger Himmelsleuchten, SMIA flew the first officially approved drone show in Germany to combine fireworks adapted to the drones with conventional fireworks. 350 drones presented a purpose-built show design for the first time. The permit came about through direct dialogue with the aviation authorities.

750 drones over Berlin’s Olympiastadion

For the international film campaign around Project Hail Mary, SMIA lifted 750 drones over the Berlin Olympiastadion. Design, permits, logistics and flight planning came together in just 14 days, because the campaign date was fixed before the first drone took off.

DATEV Challenge ROTH 2026 drone show

The drone show at the DATEV Challenge Roth was part of a complex live production of pyrotechnics, laser show, light, music and stadium dramaturgy. Rather than aiming for the largest possible number of drones, SMIA developed a precisely integrated show with 180 drones, a fully in-house design and timecode integration.
