Drone Show Vukovar: 1,600 Drones, 600 of Them with Pyrotechnics

On 29 August 2026, a drone display of 1,600 drones stood over the Gospodarska zona in Vukovar. 600 of them were hybrids: light show drones carrying additionally adapted fireworks. The occasion was the humanitarian concert “Vukovar – Zajedno za budućnost” by Marko Perković Thompson, according to the organiser in front of around 100,000 visitors. SMIA was on site with its own fleet. Managing Director Peter Smiatek prepared the show and flew it himself. The production partners were Mirnovec Pirotehnika from Croatia and Giuliani Fireworks from Italy.

The number that matters is not the 1,600. It is the 600.

What 600 Hybrid Drones Mean

A hybrid drone carries both: the image and the effect. It flies in formation like any other light show drone and ignites its pyrotechnic charge at an exact moment. After that it has different flight characteristics. Every single one has to be checked, loaded, weighed and assigned to its flight path beforehand. At 600 units, a choreography becomes a logistics task with its own pyrotechnic clearance.

The effort is not in the flight but before it: in loading, weighing, assigning every single drone to its flight path, and in planning replacements. Anyone using pyrotechnics on an aircraft plans for them from day one, not as an add-on at the end.

For comparison: at Rietberger Himmelsleuchten 2025 we combined 350 drones with adapted fireworks. It was the first officially approved pyro drone show in Germany. Vukovar was the same approach at a different scale.

A Drone Display, Not a Show

We call things by their name, even when it makes our own reference smaller: what stood in the sky over Vukovar was a drone display, not a show in the dramaturgical sense.

The brief called for motifs, not a narrative. Thirteen show elements: symbols, coats of arms and logos, opening with a larger-than-life royal portrait and an equestrian statue. Each image stood on its own and had its place in the run of the concert. For this occasion that was the right form. An audience of 100,000 people spread across an industrial site reads large, clear signs and does not follow an eight-minute dramaturgy.

How display, parade and show differ, and why the question belongs in every quotation, is explained in our article How to Spot a Good Drone Show.

Three Companies, One Airspace

The production came about as a collaboration between SMIA, Mirnovec Pirotehnika and Giuliani Fireworks. Three companies from three countries, one shared airspace, one shared schedule. SMIA provided its own fleet, prepared the show and flew it.

What counts is not the addition of fleets but the coordination: one launch area, one clearance chain, one timecode carrying the drone flight, the ground pyrotechnics and the stage programme. Anyone who has synchronised two trades knows that the effort does not grow linearly with each additional party.

What Organisers Can Take From This

The drone show Vukovar shows one thing above all: scale can be planned. 1,600 drones are not a risk when the launch area, the approval route and the redundancies are right beforehand. Pyrotechnics on the aircraft can be planned too, but they lengthen the lead time, because they need their own clearance and because replacement planning has to be part of it.

Anyone considering this scale for their event should settle three things early: which form the event actually calls for, display or show; whether pyrotechnics on the aircraft can be approved for the site; and what replacement planning for loaded aircraft looks like. We answer all three before the quotation, not after.
