Conference of State Parliament Presidents NRW
For the Conference of State Parliament Presidents, at the invitation of State Parliament President André Kuper, 200 drones staged European motifs and the symbolic handover of the baton over Rietberg. The show accompanied a political event in which precision and timing left no room to spare.

Rietberg 2023 drone show: 200 drones for the Conference of State Parliament Presidents
For the 2023 Conference of State Parliament Presidents in Rietberg, SMIA flew a drone show with 200 drones. The invitation came from André Kuper, President of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament. The show formed the close of the official programme.
The handover of the baton as the leitmotif
At its centre was the symbolic handover of the baton, representing the change of chair within the conference. Added to this were regional motifs from Rietberg and European symbols.
At a political event, the choice of motif decides the effect. A baton passing from one hand to another in the sky conveys exactly what the conference is about. Any arbitrary light spectacle would have missed the mark.
Calm rather than effect
The show relied on slow, controlled movements rather than pace. Before this audience and in this setting, restraint works more strongly than spectacle. A political occasion does not carry a show that pushes itself into the foreground.
No room in the running order
An official protocol cannot be stretched. The drone show had to hit its place in the programme exactly, neither too early nor too late. That was precisely the task: not in the number of drones, but in the timing.
Conclusion
Rietberg 2023 shows that drone shows work at official occasions too, when the design subordinates itself to the occasion rather than the other way round.
